Mayer FFA/Ag Department Students Receive Welding Certifications
Mayer, May, 2018: For the last year, multiple Mayer Agriculture members have participated in courses that cover topics from Animal Sciences to Welding Fabrication. The Mayer Agriculture Department, over the…last few years, has strived to build up their welding credentials. The instructors, Jeff Dinges and Dale Uecker have recognized a need in the community for certified professional welders, and have focused on filling that need.
In each of Mr. Dinges’ classes, students participate in a welding unit of study. During these units, Mr. Uecker, a professional welder, MICTED Board member, and former Seabees trade worker in the Navy, assists the students in preparing for certification testing. Freshmen start out with oxy-acetylene welding, to perfect their puddling technique. Sophomores move on to Stick Metal Arc Welding the following year. Juniors move up to MIG Welding. Seniors that are developed enough along the way have an opportunity to practice the hardest technique in TIG welding.
11 students, on May 16th, took their 1G American Welding Society recognized certification tests. One of those students took her 2G MIG Flux Core certification test. All 12 students passed with flying colors and are now certified professionals. “The amazing thing is that the majority of the students are only sophomores in high school and will be further trained in the years to come” says Dale Uecker. “We even had our first ever freshman receive their welding certification this year.”
Students that were tested and are now professionally certified welders are, from left to right, Morgan Mains, Adam Oen, Joey Ward, Garrett Urquides, Christian Norton, Bryan Teskey, Hailey Porter, Tyler Howard, Warren Fasching, Izrael Corrales, Cameron Gutierrez, and Delano Harvey.
